American Red Cross Specialist in Blood Bank Technology and Transfusion Medicine Program
The American Red Cross offers a Specialist in Blood Bank (SBB) Technology and Transfusion Medicine Program. This graduate-level program, structured as a hybrid model of self-study and combined virtual/on-site learning, spans one year and covers all aspects of blood center and clinical services operations.
The curriculum is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to address a broad range of complex issues related to transfusion medicine. Training includes rotations in Immunohematology Reference Labs, hospital transfusion services, and other departments, where students observe and learn about advanced practices such as HLA testing, transplantation medicine, stem cell processing, lab operations, and molecular testing.
The program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (caahep.org), following the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Specialist in Blood Bank Technology/Transfusion Medicine (CoA-SBBT).
