BIRMINGHAM (Sept. 13, 2019) – The Birmingham Legion FC and University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital are teaming up with the American Red Cross to help answer the call for blood donations. The community is invited to give blood Tuesday, Oct.1 at the BBVA Compass Field, 800 11th St S. in Birmingham and Monday, Sept. 30, through Saturday, Oct. 5, at multiple times at the UAB North Pavilion Atrium, 1802 6th Ave S. in Birmingham.
The Red Cross has an urgent need for blood donors of all types to give now to help prevent a blood shortage. Blood is needed every day for patients with many serious medical conditions. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may need blood products.
Donating blood is a way to make a lifesaving impact in the lives of patients like Ryder Oliver. On March 26, 2018, Ryder was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor called medulloblastoma at the age of three. He immediately underwent a 5 ½ hour brain surgery to remove the tumor and then received his first of many blood transfusions. Ryder then completed three rounds of chemotherapy, three rounds of high dose chemotherapy and three stem cell transplants. He finished his treatment Oct. 12, 2018, and is currently in remission.
“Giving blood is among the most selfless actions for an individual. Legion FC is a proud supporter of the Red Cross and its mission to support those in their most stressful times of need,” said Doug Hicks, Executive Vice President for the Birmingham Legion FC.
Presenting donors will receive a free Red Cross T-shirt, meal voucher for the UAB cafeteria, one game ticket, and free food, while supplies last.
“Blood drives are essential in helping ensure blood is available for patients in need, like 4-year-old, Ryder Oliver, who is a survivor of brain cancer. We cannot thank Birmingham Legion FC and UAB Hospital enough for hosting blood drives,” said Ronnika A. McFall, external communications manager of the Red Cross Alabama and Central Gulf Coast Blood Services Region. “To learn more and sign up to host a blood drive, visit RedCrossBlood.org/HostADrive.”
