ATLANTA (Oct. 1, 2018) — Help to save lives in honor of Bill Lewis with the American Red Cross and First Christian Church of Atlanta Oct. 15 from 2:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at First Christian, 4532 Lavista Road in Tucker. Bill Lewis, who died this summer, was a 92-year-old community man and faithful member of First Christian. He was known to never miss a volunteer opportunity with the Red Cross blood drives throughout his life.
The Red Cross must collect more than 13,000 blood and platelet donations every day for patients in need. Blood is needed for many different reasons. Accident and burn victims, heart surgery patients, organ transplant patients, and those receiving treatment for leukemia, cancer or sickle cell disease may all need blood.
“Volunteer donors can feel good knowing that by donating through the Red Cross they may be helping patients not only in their community, but also family and friends across the nation,” said Ronnika A. McFall, external communications manager of the American Red Cross Southern Blood Services Region. “More than 25,000 volunteers support Red Cross Biomedical services and we are honored to host this blood drive in the name of volunteer Bill Lewis who passed away recently at the age of 92.”
Those with types O, A negative and B negative blood are encouraged to make a Power Red donation at this blood drive. Power Red donors give a concentrated dose of red blood cells during a single donation, allowing them to maximize their impact. During this type of donation, red blood cells are separated from other blood components, and the plasma and platelets are safely and comfortably returned to the donor. Those who come to give blood, platelets or plasma Oct. 1-31, 2018, will be automatically entered to win one of five (5) $500 gift cards redeemable at hundreds of merchants through GiftCertificates.com.
