The American Red Cross collects and distributes more than 12,000 units of red blood cells (RBCs) every day to meet patient needs at more than 2,300 hospitals across the nation.
Red Blood Cell Products
Red blood cells (RBCs) are given to patients with bleeding, anemia, or other hematologic conditions. The Red Cross offers a full complement of RBCs to meet both adult and pediatric/neonatal transfusion needs. All products are leukoreduced and available for all ABO/RhD blood types.

- RBCs typically have a volume of 300-400 mL/unit.
- RBCs contain approximately 50-80 g of hemoglobin (Hgb) or 160-275 mL of red cells.
- RBCs normally also have < 50 mL of donor plasma in addition to the preservative and anticoagulant.
- The specific unit volume depends upon the Hgb level of the donor and how the blood is collected and processed.
RBCs are stored in an anticoagulant (CPD, CP2D) in combination with an additive solution (AS1, AS3 and AS5). The chart below describes the specific formulation for each of the bag configurations used by the Red Cross.

- RBC products must be stored in approved and monitored storage units and maintained at 1-6° Celsius.
- The shelf life of RBCs is determined by the anticoagulant and additive solution.
- AS-1, AS-3, and AS-5 have a 42-day shelf life.
- RBCs can also be treated with glycerol and stored frozen for 10 years or more.
- Available in all ABO/RhD blood types and certain antigen units for adults.
- Scheduled orders are recommended for up to 70% of a hospital’s complete RBC needs to ensure a consistent supply.
- Ad hoc orders for RBCs are placed in Connect.
- RBCs are shipped with up to 27 units per box in validated containers with wet ice and may contain a temperature-stabilizing pack.
